The JOY Center (Just Older Youth, Inc.) was started in 2017 when a group of local visionaries recognized the need for an inter-generational center to serve the communities of Key Largo, Tavernier, and Islamorada. The existing Senior Center was being torn down to make way for a new courthouse and jail, so the time was right to advocate for seniors and senior programs. JOY, Inc.’s goal was to ensure programs would be expanded and a facility would be created to provide flexible space for engaging and innovative programs. We are working to create a place we can be proud of — where all of our Upper Keys neighbors can grow and learn, make new connections, and renew old friendships.
As we worked to bring this new, dynamic center from dream to reality, we initially partnered with Keys to Peace to establish the JOY Center, a free weekly program of social and educational activities designed for lifelong learners. The first JOY Center series was hosted on Wednesdays from January 3 through April 11, 2018. Programs have since expanded to run year round. Check out the past programs of the JOY Center to learn more about some of our classes and presentations.
When the global pandemic hit in 2020, the JOY Center quickly adjusted and began offering classes online through Zoom. We got through this difficult time by maintaining our schedule of classes, keeping our members connected, and supported. It is our belief that there is always a new way to experience JOY and together we can make it happen.
We welcome all members of the community to join us for JOY Inc. events and to get involved in our mission. Together, we can create a space that is as vibrant as the community it will serve.
